Exploring Arabic Calligraphy
This pictograph was created with the idea of Arabic calligraphy morphed with modern iconography. Starting with the Arabic word for “squirrel,” I manipulated the letters to look close to an actual squirrel’s form. The end result could be read from right to left, but could also be understood and interpreted by someone who may not be fluent in the Arabic language.

This small but elaborate exercise is one of the many demonstrations of an ancient artistic tradition that showcases the shape and form of each letter flowing into each other, all while creating compelling imagery.
